The closing of a year always brings about a time of reflection, and for us here at Equita, that means more than just personal introspection—it means looking back at what we’ve accomplished so far, and what we can do better in the coming months to be an even stronger advocate for women and girls the world over. We’ve seen some major milestones this year from our end, as well as from the founders in our network, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. This has also been an historic year for women within the United States—equal pay for equal work has shifted from a fringe agenda to a national discussion and the Women’s Soccer victory fueled the popularity of the “Play Like a Girl” campaign, encouraging young girls to follow their passions regardless of the obstacles. We’ve been proud to stand alongside this new wave of advocates for women, especially those who are working to equalize the field of tech.
We’ve been honored this year to receive a $50,000 grant from the United States Small Business Administration (read more about this here). This, along with our participation in panels alongside 500 Startups and other major accelerators, and our collaboration with InnovateHER, a governmental initiative to support women in business, only serves to confirm our belief that we are on the right path to making a difference. The startups in our network have seen great success as well, particularly Tinsel, which was recently named to the top 19 coolest new businesses in San Francisco list by Business Insider and exceeded their Indiegogo funding campaign.
In the coming months, we’re excited to welcome a new cohort of startups into our network, with initiatives ranging from health tech to personal education platforms to mobile gaming with a social message. We’re looking forward to introducing you to each and every one of these incredible companies and the tireless founders who back them in a new blog post series in the East meets West tradition. These startups come from all over the country, and particularly the two coasts, to meet under our roof for support and guidance—we couldn’t be happier to have them here or more intrigued to see where they’ll go next. We hope you’ll join us on our social media channels in the coming months for our #equitawelcomes campaign to meet one of our new companies and welcome them into the Equita family.
As always, we’d like to thank you for your continued support of Equita. We truly could not accomplish the things we do without the friends and family that stand with us, providing the backbone and inspiration for all our initiatives. We’re grateful you’re here, and we hope you stick around to see all the exciting things the end of this year and the beginning of a new one have to offer.
